Does your website have an SSL Certificate? Does it need one?
Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) certificates, sometimes called digital certificates, are used to establish an encrypted connection between a browser or user’s computer and a server or website. The SSL connection protects sensitive data, such as credit card information, from being intercepted by non-authorized parties. In short, it protects private data when submitted online from being stolen. All e-commerce sites have one. You can tell when you go to the shopping cart if it has (https:) in the web address. The (s) is the certificate.
Until recently, non-ecommerce sites that weren’t actively selling things online or collecting private financial data didn’t need one. But Google has made changes to how sites are indexed and if you come across a site without a certificate you are likely to receive a warning message like this:
In addition, Google is now indexing sites with SSL certificates higher than those without which means that your SEO is also tied to whether or not you have an SSL Certificate.
While not mandatory in any sense, remember, their perception is your reality. What happens if a potential client visits your site and sees that message? What if the tables were turned? Would you continue on or find a more ‘trusted’ source?
Technology is changing at breakneck speeds. It’s impossible to keep up with the changes. Request a website and marketing assessment and make certain your efforts are paying the best dividends.
